Sunday the 8th Of July,
“Life begins At Forty”
Walter B Pitkin
Well that was a lie then. Two groups of riders met up at nine am and it was decided to ride together and part company in Cauldon lowe as one group was riding to Hartington and we were going to Carsington. We set out along Buxton Road and turned for Thornclife but then turned for Bradnop much to our surprise. We took on the climb up to Bottom House and set off along Ipstones Edge and in to Cauldron where we parted company with Andy Bain’s group. Meanwhile we rode in to Ellistone and Norbury and Snelston before crossing the main Ashbourne -Derby road. Riding through Osmaston, we spotted a bike scarecrow with bike in the hedge and two legs sticking out of the top which the group loved so much we stopped for a picture. We carried on in to Bradley and along the dam road where the pace picked up as all were keen to escape the sun and enjoy a coffee and cake.
It was decided to head back by Brassington bank where Chris E was in the lead followed by Steve W. We re-grouped at the top and rode in to Elton before turning for Middleton and Parsley Hey. The descent in to Crowedcote provided a nice breeze but the climb out proved tough in the heat. So much so that a break was taken in Longnor for riders to stock up on drinks. We rode up the Warslow climb to the mermaid and passed by the recent moorland fire and you could still feel the heat from the ravaged landscape. We arrived back in leek at 2.40pm after a hot, fifty eight mile ride. Thanks to Phil S for leading the ride and it was great to see him back in the nine am group.
